Human Resources/Career Development

The Human Resources/Career Development Unit (HR/CD) is responsible for providing training to police personnel and, in conjunction with the Personnel Administration Department, recruiting new officers and civilian personnel to fill vacant positions within the department.  The HR/CD Unit is staffed with a Police Sergeant, a Police Officer, and a civilian Training Specialist.  The police department has on staff several certified trainers who are dedicated and highly motivated to supply the highest quality of training possible.

The staff of the HR/CD Unit is responsible for coordinating the entire department's training needs and maintaining the training records of the agency.  Training is provided on recurring basis in areas of high liability and to satisfy Florida Department of Law Enforcement mandatory training and retraining requirements.  Updated training is also offered in firearms, impact weapons, chemical agents, defensive tactics, police driving, and a wide variety of other useful tools in order to maintain our officers competitive edge in the law enforcement field.

The recruiting function of this unit is of utmost importance because we endeavor to hire the best-qualified individuals to represent our department and the community we serve.  Our staff  attends job fairs at state and local colleges and advertisements are placed in the local newspapers and on minority radio stations in an effort to reach a greater cross-section of the community.

Police Officer Job Description

This is a highly responsible position within the City of North Miami that involves the protection of life and property with a focus on proactive, community based enforcement strategies.  Routine assignments include vehicle patrol in assigned zones, motorcycle traffic enforcement, marine patrol, bicycle or foot patrol.  Officers are often asked to participate in community programs, provide lecture services to local schools, clubs, and businesses.  Officers are supervised by a higher ranking officer and perform work in accordance with City and Department policies and standard operating procedures. 

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position of Police Officer with the North Miami Police Department, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Be a citizen of the United States<
  • Posses a High School Diploma or its equivalent
  • Posses a valid Florida driver's license
  • Have no felony convictions or certain misdemeanors
  • If a veteran, must have a honorable discharge
