The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for May is Detective Michael Gaudio, who is currently assigned to the General Investigations Unit. Sergeant Annmarie Watler nominated him after recognizing his perseverance and dedication to duty in the following case:
On June 21, 2008, North Miami Police Officers responded NE 4 Ave and 134 St regarding a homicide. Detective Gaudio was assigned the lead in this case, his first homicide.
Upon arrival, Detective Gaudio began collecting information from different sources. He discovered that just moments prior to the initial call, an armed robbery had occurred within close proximity and a subject with a gunshot wound had gone to North Shore Hospital but was transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Detective Gaudio learned that the City of Miami Detectives had responded to the hospital and spoke with the subject and identified him as Gary Jean. Later that day, Detective Gaudio responded to the hospital to speak with the subject but he had already been discharged.
In the days that followed, Detective Gaudio met with specialized units and organized surveillance on Gary Jean’s residence. He managed to elude the police. All subsequent leads and interviews led to the same person, and in April 2009, Detective Gaudio obtained a warrant for Gary Jean's DNA. On April 10, 2009, Detective Gaudio located the subject, arrested and charged him with 1st degree murder.
Detective Gaudio demonstrated great leadership skills throughout the investigation and was selected as Officer of the Month of May 2009. He will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Noon.
