Intervention is the first step in breaking the cycle of Domestic Violence. In recent years, a great deal of attention has been given to Domestic Violence. North Miami Police Department has a specialized investigative unit dedicated to domestic violence cases. The Domestic Violence Unit (D.V.U.) conducts follow-up investigations on all reported cases of domestic violence. A case is considered “Domestic” related if the parties involved:
The North Miami Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit currently consists of four specially trained detectives, one sergeant, and a victim’s advocate. The D.V.U. has formed partnerships with numerous other agencies and service providers throughout South Florida to network as many services as possible to assist victims. Because aggressive prosecution of domestic violence cases has been shown to significantly reduce victimization, arrests are made whenever possible in these types of cases. State Laws have been created to enhance the ability of law enforcement officers to intervene and therefore help break the cycle. Without intervention domestic violence almost always becomes more and more severe with each incident. Because children exposed to domestic violence are far more likely to mimic that behavior in their adult lives, breaking the cycle of Domestic Violence is paramount. Victims of domestic violence can help themselves by contacting the police. A variety of resources are available. With special training and dedication, D.V.U. detectives investigate all
types of domestic crimes including assault, battery, sex offenses, child
abuse/neglect, elderly abuse/neglect, injunction violations, and a variety
of other crimes. The Florida Department of Children and Families notifies
NMPD of all of their investigations within the city of North Miami. Those
cases are co-investigated by D.V.U. detectives whenever assistance is
required. If you have questions regarding Domestic Violence,
