The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) conducts criminal investigations into sophisticated, organized, and conspiratorial narcotics trafficking, vice crimes, organized crime, and street level narcotics distribution.  SIU also targets chronic neighborhood criminal activity when deemed appropriate.  This Unit has assisted various agencies, including Florida Department of Law Enforcement; U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms; and City of Miami Police Department, with long-term homicide investigations and R.I.C.O. investigations.

Since the terrorist attack on 9-11-01, the unit has been actively participating in the Homeland Security Initiative by assisting U.S. Customs with their inbound/outbound port operations in the tri-county area.

The Special Investigations Unit members constantly undergo training to maintain their proficiency and keep abreast of the ever-changing trends in crime.
