In
order to assist victims of crime, the North Miami Police Department implemented
the Victim Intervention Program (VIP). A Victim’s Advocate who is
specialized in Victimization, crisis intervention and psychology heads
the VIP.
What is a Victim’s Advocate?
A Victim’s Advocate is a trained professional who assists
Victims of crimes. The Victim’s Advocate can often provide crisis
counseling, advocacy services, and referrals and information.
I am a victim, how do I know if I am eligible?
In order to qualify for services, you must be a victim of a violent
crime. The VIP will provide assistance with property crimes only if you
are elderly or disabled. If you are a minor who witnessed a violent crime,
you are eligible to receive therapy at no cost to you.
What types of services/benefits am I eligible for as a victim
of crime?
As a victim of crime, you are eligible for the following services:
- Crisis Counseling
- Therapy
- Criminal Justice Support
- Information and Referral
- Emergency Legal Advocacy
- Assistance in Filing Compensation Claims
- Personal Advocacy
The Attorney General’s Office offers Victim’s Compensation
to Victims of Crime who qualify. This service is a last resort. Through
this program you are entitled to the following services:
- Mental health counseling
- Compensation for disability or catastrophic injuries
- Wage Loss Compensation
- Funeral and burial expenses up to a certain amount
- Domestic Violence Relocation
- Assistance in paying medical and dental expenses
- Reimbursement for property loss (only if you are elderly or disabled)
