The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for January 2012 is Officer Enrique Rivero, who is currently assigned to Uniform Patrol, Midnight Shift. Acting Sergeant Diana Roman nominated him for his alertness and immediate action demonstrated in the following case:
On December 29, 2011, at 12:30 a.m., units were dispatched to a burglary in progress on the east side of North Miami. The details of the call indicated that several males were breaking into the rear section of a home.
Once the call was dispatched, Officer Rivero expeditiously responded to the scene and as he was approaching the area, he directed another unit to the front of the home in a tactical move to surround the home. Once Officer Rivero arrived at the scene, he confronted five males at the rear of the home, who began running, despite his commands to stop. One of the subjects dropped a gun as he fled. Officer Rivero then, swiftly and accurately, set a perimeter that left all five subjects secured in the area with nowhere to go. All five subjects were ultimately located within the perimeter with the assistance of K-9 and other officers. One subject was located, also within the perimeter, inside a stolen vehicle believed to be the getaway car.
Officer Rivero’s diligence in his pursuit to protect life and property, coupled with his excellent tactical skills, resulted in the apprehension of several armed occupied burglary subjects. Also, property was located and returned to the victims, a gun was impounded and taken off the streets, and a stolen vehicle recovered. In addition, four burglaries were discovered in the area, prior to the victims being aware, and three were directly linked to the subjects.
Officer Rivero was chosen as Officer of the Month for January 2012 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club on Wednesday, February 22nd at 12:00 Noon.
