The North Miami Police Department’s “Officers of the Month” for January 2013 are Alfred Bryant and Nelson Perez. Officer Bryant has been with the North Miami Police Department for nine years and is currently on the Midnight Shift. Officer Perez has been with the North Miami Police Department for three years and is currently on the Day Shift. They were nominated for this award by Sergeant Andrew Rossi for their hard work and dedication in the following case:
On November 27, 2012, a theft of money occurred at the 7 Eleven convenience store on NE 125 Street. The unknown suspect took a donation box for the “Kids with Leukemia Foundation,” which contained approximately $25, from the front counter area while the clerk was distracted helping other patrons of the store. The subject then fled the scene with the donation box undetected. The store clerk observed that the donation box was missing a short time later.
Upon being advised of the theft at roll call the next day, Officer Perez took it upon himself to continue the investigation and attempt to identify the suspect. Officer Perez met with the store manager after the conclusion of his shift and viewed the video surveillance footage of the day and time in question. Upon looking at the footage, Officer Perez not only observed the theft, he recognized the suspect, who was a local patron of the store with whom he had several past encounters. Officer Perez obtained a copy of the video and impounded it at the North Miami Police Department for evidence. Officer Perez advised the Midnight Shift of his findings the next evening and made all efforts to locate the suspect for the remainder of his work week.
On December 1, 2012, Officer Bryant was patrolling the area of NE 6 Avenue and 124 Street, when he observed the suspect walking in the area. Officer Bryant, recalling the information provided by Officer Perez, immediately stopped him and took him into custody. Officer Bryant took the initiative to review the suspect’s criminal history at which time he observed that he had three previous convictions for petit theft, which made any further thefts a felony, regardless of the dollar amount. He was subsequently arrested for Felony Theft and transported to the Dade County jail.
Both Officers Perez and Bryant demonstrated tremendous conviction and dedication to identify and apprehend a thief who deprived much needed donations to a Foundation dedicated to improving the lives of terminally ill children. Officers Perez and Bryant took the extra effort to follow up and turn a misdemeanor theft with no suspect information into a solid felony arrest.
Officers Alfred Bryant and Nelson Perez were chosen as the Officers of the Month for January 2013 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 12:00 Noon.
