The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for November 2013 is Officer Alfred Bryant. Officer Bryant has been a member of the North Miami Police Department for 10 years. He is currently assigned to the Patrol Division, Midnight shift. Officer Bryant was nominated for this award by Sergeant Ransom Carter for his diligence and dedication to the North Miami Police Department in the following case: On October 4, 2013, while on routine patrol, Officer Bryant observed a subject walking through the parking lot of an apartment complex on the east side of North Miami. Officer Bryant did not recognize him as a resident from the area and wanted to speak to him to see if he lived in the vicinity. If he didn't live in the area, he wanted to determine his reason for being in the area.
When the subject saw Officer Bryant's vehicle, he attempted to conceal himself from sight. Officer Bryant was able to make verbal contact with him. The subject then attempted to walk away, at a quick pace, from the area. He was detained by Officer Bryant, who began a loitering and prowling investigation.
The subject, after his Miranda Warnings were read, was unable to dispel Officer Bryant's concerns for the safety of persons and/or property in the area. The subject was taken into custody after he briefly struggled in an attempt to resist arrest. A check of the immediate area, where the subject was attempting to conceal himself, revealed a Beretta semi-automatic pistol. A records check of the firearm revealed that it had been stolen out of Hollywood, Florida. The firearm was recovered and impounded. The subject was arrested and charged with loitering and prowling and possession of a weapon by a violent career criminal. If Officer Bryant had not made contact with the suspect at the time that he did, the subject would have posed immediate danger to those living in the area and their property through robbery or burglary.
We are proud to recognize the diligence and dedication that Officer Alfred Bryant demonstrated in affecting the arrest of a career criminal who posed a threat to all citizens in the immediate area where he was first observed.
Officer Bryant was chosen as Officer of the Month for November 2013 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 12:00 Noon.
