The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Year” for 2013 is Detective Alanzo Rhymer who is assigned to the Investigative Section. Detective Rhymer has been a member of the North Miami Police Department for 14 years.
Detective Rhymer is recognized for his intuitiveness, initiative and quick thinking for the following cases:
In May of 2013, an Armed Carjacking, Kidnapping and Armed Robbery occurred in North Miami. The victim was stopped at a red light when he was approached by the subject, who pointed a gun at him and demanded he open the door. The victim was forced into his trunk where he remained for several hours. He was forced to withdraw money from various ATMS. Fortunately, the victim managed to escape when the subjects stopped at a gas station.
Once assigned the case, Detective Rhymer began an extensive search through the countless locations the victim was taken to in search of a valuable subject photo. Once a flyer was produced another North Miami Police Officer identified the subject. Detective Rhymer was able to apprehend the subject and obtain a full confession. The subject not only implicated himself on all aspects of this crime, but he provided additional information and names that were used to show line-ups on additional subjects in this and other cases.
In September of 2013, while on his way home, Detective Rhymer observed a white KIA Sorrento, occupied by five subjects, in our city. He became suspicious and performed a records check on the tag. As a result, he learned that the car had been stolen out of North Miami Beach the day before. He followed the vehicle, without being noticed, until other police units could assist.
The driver of the stolen vehicle spotted Detective Rhymer and the others before they attempted a felony traffic stop. The driver sped away and then purposely slammed on his brakes in an attempt to initiate a collision with the officers. The driver then intentionally attempted to ram into one of the North Miami officer’s vehicles to avoid apprehension. All five suspects fled on foot from the vehicle. Detective Rhymer quickly set up a perimeter with the assistance of Miami-Dade Aviation and other units from North Miami. As a result of Detective Rhymer’s quick response, all five subjects were caught, including the driver of the stolen vehicle.
The combination of initiative, diligence and intuitiveness displayed by Detective Rhymer resulted in the apprehension of violent felons and the return of a stolen vehicle.
Detective Rhymer was chosen as Officer of the Year for 2013 and will be honored at the Greater North Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon, held monthly at the Miami Shores Country Club, on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 12:00 Noon.
